Printing Your Family History Book

When printing your family history book, you may have lots of questions: What size should my family history book be? Is there an optimal number of pages it should include? We are here to help; give us a call or pop on live chat and your very own account manager can answer these and any other questions you may have.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to printing a family history book. The decision is entirely up to you but, there are a few things we would recommend. You want this to be a book that will stand the test of time, look beautiful and feel special. With this in mind we would suggest that you opt for hardback binding. You can then add special touches such as a cloth cover with matching ribbon marker or gold foil to give it that real wow factor.

If hardback binding is a little out of your budget, there’s no need to worry. We often see paperback family history books, and these can be made to look just as special if some time is spent on making sure the cover design really stands out.

Family history books can be any size from A5 to A4 or anywhere in-between. It is worth thinking about the images you are going to include when making this decision. If you have a large family tree that you want to capture on one page then A4 would be the way to go.

We also love it when people add blank pages to the end of their printed family history books to give future generations a place to add their memories too.

Designing Your Family History Book

If you are designing your family history book yourself then use one of our downloadable templates that has the correct margins and page size pre-set. You can then add the text, images and other content as you wish. Once you are done you can submit the file for a free file assessment to check it is set up correctly for print.

If you would like some help with design and layout, we have a team of designers who really know what they are doing when it comes to family history books. Over the years we have produced hundreds of beautiful family history books.

Other things to consider when making your family history book

The content

What are you going to include in your family history book? It is best to try and map this out before you start writing. Write a list of who you want to talk to, the stories you want to firm up, and the pictures you need to get copies of. Having all this information to hand will make the writing part a lot easier.

How many copies are you going to order?

Generally, family history books are created and given to family members as a gift. This means you can get a good idea of how many you will need before we start printing them. The more you have on your first order the cheaper the books become per copy so bear this in mind when placing your first order.

Editing

Are you going to edit and proof your family history book yourself or do you need some help with this? If you are going to edit the book yourself you can download our self-editing checklist. If you would like some help then head over to our editing page and see what we can offer.

Our Recommendations

When it comes to family history books there are so many options, they don't fit into a 'general' style, it really is up to you how you want the finished book to look. The differences here really come down to budget.

If budget is not a question then we would suggest you go for a hardback, A4 book, printed in full colour with foiling to the cover. However, if you are trying to keep costs down then an A5 paperback can work just as well.
