Hardback / Case Bound Books.

Hardback / Case bound books are a popular choice for special edition biography publications, they are also an ideal format for school yearbooks. Some authors also like to bring out limited edition hardback print runs to compliment their paperback versions.

The binding process for hardback books is similar to the perfect binding procedure that is used for paperbacks. Firstly we add end papers to the front and back of the book block. The end papers will be used as a hinge when the book block is adhered to the hardback case. Then we mill the spine edge of the unbound book to create a rough surface for the glue to bond to. The book block then passes over a very hot glue tank where glue is applied by a revolving wheel. A plain sheet of paper is used as a temporary cover, which is wrapped around the book block. This is pressure clamped on to the book block and the glue is allowed to set. Once cooled, the temporary cover is removed from the book and the bound blocks are trimmed flush to the desired finished size. The book block is then glued in to a pre made, cloth covered, hardback case and a pre printed dust jacket is added.

What size should my Hardback Book be?

We can supply Hardback books in a range of sizes, A6, A5, Royal, A4 or a custom size of your choice. Our instant price calculator will give prices for our standard book sizes, but you will need to contact us direct for custom size prices.

Full colour or black and white printing?

We can supply hardback books with either black and white or colour insides and the dust jackets are printed in colour as standard.

How many pages can I have?

Hardback books need to have a minimum of 40 pages and a maximum of 600 pages in order for the binding process to be effective. For books of less than 40 pages we suggest using our booklet (stitch binding) option.

What material is used for the Hardback case?

The hardback case is made using a cloth material. We do not print on the covering of the actual hardback case, but we can add gold foil printing for an additional charge. A wrap around cover / dust jacket is added to the cased book. The dust jacket has oversized flaps that are folded and tucked in to the cased book.

How do I design my book for printing?

For text books (where the printing doesn't cover the complete page) we suggest you leave a minimum of 15mm margins (white space) around all four edges of your text. If your book has pages that are printed across the whole page (no margins) we suggest that you add a 5mm bleed. For more information on bleeds please click here.

We prefer to receive artwork as individual pages within a document, rather than double page spreads. For design and layout advice, please call us on 01733 898102.

If you would like us to design your book please call us on 01733 898102 and we will arrange for one of our senior designers to do this for you.
